Poetic Justice
Martha Nussbaum's Poetic Justice she writes , "good literature is disturbing in a way that history and social science writing frequently are not. Because it summons powerful emotions, it disconcerts and puzzles. It inspires distrust of conventional pieties and exacts a frequently painful confrontation with one's own thoughts and intentions"(5). This passage is what inspired me to take literature classes. I want to read something that assembles great passion within me!

Memento
Aristotle writes, “All
men by nature desire understanding.” He continues, “In men, experience comes
into being from memory; for many memories of the same thing result in the
capacity for one experience.” Memento forces the viewer to consider if
our memories are fact or fiction. Can others influence our memory perception? Memento was introduced as an
example of the uncanny, which accepts several forms. Automatism is the form of uncanny that best represents Memento,
in the fact that Leonard’s short term memory loss classifies him as being
mentally ill. His obsession to catch his wife’s killer pushes him to madness.

The journey of language
While watching Dancing
with the Stars one constant kept saying he wasn’t a dancer. Therefore, I feel
it’s okay if I make the statement again; I’m not an English major. Today I’m questing why I’m taking a class
that’s not required for my major (Integrated studies/ History/American
Studies). However, I do believe there
are no accidents in life. This leads me to some deep reflection of what I need
to experience through taking this course. From a historical prospective we are
learning about theorists and theories of critical thought. It seems there’s jargon associated with each
field of study and half the battle is learning that language. Keeping this in mind, putting together a
lexicon will help me organize new terms and define them.
Looking back to why I
signed up for this class it was due to being frustrated over a law and
literature class I took one summer. The
texts we were required to read held a multiple of terms I was unfamiliar with. Over the weekend I pulled out my books and started
reading to see if the new terms I am learning were in these texts. To my surprise,
I understood what I was reading. Even though, at times I’m completely confused this
journey will open my eyes to things I need to see.
