Memento

Aristotle writes, “All men by nature desire understanding.” He continues, “In men, experience comes into being from memory; for many memories of the same thing result in the capacity for one experience.”  Memento forces the viewer to consider if our memories are fact or fiction. Can others influence our memory perception?   Memento was introduced as an example of the uncanny, which accepts several forms. Automatism is the form of uncanny that best represents Memento, in the fact that Leonard’s short term memory loss classifies him as being mentally ill. His obsession to catch his wife’s killer pushes him to madness.
